Jane White - City & Guilds Fashion (Adv), Cert Ed

Jane has always been passionate about fashion and started making her own clothes at the age of 9.

Having trained in dressmaking, pattern cutting, tailoring and design, Jane specialises in couture bespoke dressmaking through her business, Unique Couture, based near Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Commissions include bridal wear for the mature bride and overseas wedding destinations, traditional tailoring, day, evening and prom wear. Jane also helps ladies who have non-standard figures or find clothes difficult due to illness or disability.

Overlocking workshop

Jane currently teaches further education in Hull and dressmaking skills for the Northern College of Costume in York. Being committed to, and having gained a reputation for high quality garment construction, pattern cutting, sewing machine and overlocking tuition, Jane decided to use her experience of teaching City & Guilds Fashion, BTech National Diploma Fashion & Clothing and Foundation Degree Fashion and Costume, to set up Unique Couture Tuition with the aim of meeting not only requests for more specific and flexible sessions but in reaction to the decline in traditional provision due to funding and the lack of qualified teachers.

A number of Jane students have progressed on to fashion and costume degree courses, work in theatres and one returned to her native Zambia with enough skills to set up her own dressmaking business.

  • Dressmaking techniques
  • Overlocking from beginner to advanced
  • Pattern drafting
